Although the holiday is most commonly associated with the Christian celebration of Jesus' resurrection, many of the symbols and traditions used during this time of year predate Christianity. Eastern Orthodox churches dye eggs red to symbolize the blood of christ, but ancient Sumerians and Egyptians also decorated eggs to be placed at graves.
